What is Ayurveda?

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is one of the oldest forms of Holistic Healing, developed more than 3000 years ago in India.

The sole purpose of Ayurveda is to create a balance between the mind, the body, and the spirit. With a goal of achieving good, stable health and overall wellness.

In Ayurveda, it is believed that every person is made of Five basic elements:

  • Earth
  • Air
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Space

When the elements are combined in the human body they create three life force energies, also known as Dosha’s:

 VATA                        PITTA                  KAPHA

/         \                          /        \                    /            \

Space +  Air               Fire  +  Water        Water  +  Earth

When the Dosha’s are in balance your overall health and wellness is balanced as well.

(MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT)

For most, one Dosha will usually stand out from the rest. It is believed that symptoms you may develop are linked to the specific Dosha that is stronger than the rest.

My Personal Journey:

Now that we have a better understanding of what Ayurveda is, and how it effects our health and wellness. I want to discuss my personal experience having my first ever Ayurvedic Consultation with Dr. Meghana Thanki, my favorite Naturopathic Doctor and Ayurvedic Practitioner.

The week prior to my Ayurvedic Consult, I fell ill with what seemed to be a pretty serious sore throat. Luckily I work for Dr. Thanki, and I was able to nip the sickness in the butt in a matter of a few days. When it comes to herbal medicine, there is no quick fix. Between taking the herbs two times a day, gargling with warm water mixed with Turmeric and  Triphala powder every few hours. Nursing yourself back to health can take some true dedication. However; with being able to rest over the weekend, consistently taking my herbs, gargling, drinking warm liquids, as well as brothy soups. I was better than ever by Monday morning.

After being sick for a week, I knew it was time I really look into getting my mental, physical, emotional, as well as spiritual health back on track.

Tuesday morning came, and it was time for my first Ayurvedic Consultation. I sat down with Dr. Thanki in her office and we started discussing my lifestyle choices in the past all the way up to the present. There are two things I am looking to achieve with the help of Ayurveda, and those two things are help with my recent skin issues as well as help with my anxiety.

What to expect at your first consultation:

The consultation is the length of one hour and thirty minutes, so within this time you can expect to absorb a significant amount of information. The doctor will also administer a Tongue and Pulse exam. An initial consultation with the doctor is a $300 dollar flat rate, this includes your first month of care, custom herbs for your first thirty days prescribed by the Doctor, the first follow-up is usually seven to fourteen days after your first consultation. You will also receive a complimentary copy of Dr. Thanki’s book “The Ayurvedic Lens” which documents her personal experience working with Ayurveda and how it became her passion. The book also goes into more detail about Ayurveda itself.

All in all I can say that the initial consultation was definitely worth it. I hope through the change of diet and lifestyle I will be able to achieve the overall health and wellness I truly desire.

(I will be consistently updating my Ayurvedic Journey over time, so if you are interested in the results of this process there will be more information to come in the near future).

Stay Tuned(:
